The JRE includes the JVM - specifically java and javaw in [JRE]/bin.  javaw
is the JVM without the command window.

In a command prompt, what do you get when you try "java -version"?  

I was going to suggest that the issue could be the lack of CLASSPATH and/or
JAVA_HOME statement in /etc/profile, but the error stated the issue was with
the PATH environment variable.

Not sure. jre = Java Runtime Environment, however I've seen
the Java VM listed as jvm, not jre, so go figure ;-(

There may be more docs on the SUN site.
