I think we might need a bit more information before we can offer a lot
of help.
When you say to reformatted, does that mean you also wiped out your XP
partition?
Are you attempting to dual boot XP and Linux from one hard drive with
multiple partitions or are you using a separate hard drive for Linux?
What is your partition structure like?
eg: /dev/hda1 for XP
/dev/hda2 for /boot
/dev/hda3 for /
/dev/hda4 for swap
You can find this out by running fdisk /dev/hda and typing p for print,
then q for quit. Likewise for /dev/hdb if it is the second hard drive
in the system, /dev/hdc for the third, etc.
Which bootloader are you using? Lilo? Grub?
What does your bootloader configuration file look like? cat
/etc/lilo.conf or cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
When you re-installed Linux, did you actually reformat your /home
directory? Some distros don't format that directory by default if there
is already data there.
When you mention lost directories, lost files, etc. which files or
directories are you talking about? What is the error message? When
does it happen? At boot time, logon, or when you are using the system?
