[Discuss] Mounting vfat USB drives with full read/write capability

I find that very often, when I mount a vfat USB drive in Kubuntu
(either from the command line using sudo, or with Dolphin), the
permissions are set so that I cannot write to it (except from the
command line using sudo).
I am not allowed to change any of the permissions or ownership information, even with sudo.
Is there a way to mount them reliably so that I have full read-write priviledges?
