[Discuss] Network traffic question...

I have a network traffic question that I could really use some advise
on.

    While trying to trace the source of some recent major slowdowns in
my system, I noticed the network monitor is showing traffic activity I
can't account for. While the system is idle it shows repeated spikes of
350KB outbound and 238KB inbound, at 5 second intervals. I do not know a
lot about networking, and so I have not yet been able to figure out what
might be causing this. Needless to say, I ran chkrootkit ... with no
obvious positive results. Any suggestions as to how I could diagnose
this, and of course fix it if it's a problem, would be very much
appreciated.
