[Discuss] Wide screen monitor

I searched the Mepis depository using Synaptic package manager, and
found file: xserver-xorg-video-ati v 1:6.6.3-2
which I downloaded.
(Does this mean that it was installed by Synaptic, or do I have to do
something else to install it?)
This did not seem to make any difference in the xorg.conf file in the
"Device" section or the "Monitor" sections ...still seemed to be running
on the vesa driver.
Also there was no note of any change in /var/log/xorg.0.log
I Googled "xserver-xorg-video-ati v 1:6.6.3-2" which took me to the
Debian packages site and it looks like this driver is in mid development
phase.
Any suggestions?
