OK, what video chip are you using?

Some Linux drivers *cough*old Intel*cough* used the BIOS for 
modesetting, which typically didn't include widescreen modes. So setting 
such modes would work in Windows (which didn't use the BIOS) but not in 
Linux (which did).

The new Intel driver -doesn't- have this problem; though others still 
do. If you have a chipset supported by one of these wonderful drivers, 
you might have to use a hack to work around this, such as overwriting a 
mode in the VESA mode table. More on this later, if it turns out this is 
what you need.
