Most new to Linux are coming for a Windows environment and personally I
think Gnome is likely to feel more alien to them than KDE. Many would
disagree, so I think if a newbie really doesn't like Gnome then they
should be offered KDE before they walk away. If this can still be done
on the same stable easy to use OS then the transition should be easier.
When I started with Linux I found by switching between Gnome and KDE I
was able to decide which one I liked best for every day use. But I test
my code on both Gnome and KDE.
