Hi Joan,

You said you liked PCLinuxOS so I tried it.  I found the default black 
and white theme a little "Goth" but otherwise ok pretty standard Gnome.  
However, the install was a bit ragged and I think might be a bit too 
tricky for the newbie?  Silly things like having to initially log on as 
Guest with no clues as to the password which turned out to be "guest" of 
course.  Similarly to log on as root the default password was "root"!  
It did not configure grub properly and failed to write the MBR on my old 
system.  I had to make the grub entries in another grub by hand.  
Haven't explored further than that so far.  Incidentally, PCLinuxOS is a 
fork from Mandriva which would not run on my old system but was quite 
nice on my new system.  Both distros have built in 3D effects compiz 
fusion by default which might interest you on your system.

Out of curiosity could you try Fedora on your dual monitor set up and 
see how it does.  It works fine on all my machines but you never know!
