I solved this problem by simply giving girlfriend laptop with linux 
preinstalled. Problem solved.

And she's noticed that it doesn't have all the nasty problems the 
Windows boxes she's exposed to have...

I do pretty much zero maintenance and it just keeps working. It's great.
