[Discuss] My first laptop...bummer

Before you do anything drastic perhaps you could tell us all exactly what you have running. i.e. you mentioned Ubuntu, are you running NetworkManager?  What basic diagnostics have you tried using wireless tools, what do you get from /sbin/ifconfig?
