The computers do have different hardware.  I did successfully write and 
verify a DVD by following a variation of Gustavo's suggestion: I booted 
from a live Kubuntu 8.04 CD and tried K3b from it, and it worked OK.  I 
checked its settings and did find a difference between those and the 
ones on our installations.  On the "Configure K3b" > "Advanced", the 
selection "Do not eject after writing" was unchecked in both my computer 
and my wife's. However, as K3b was loaded with the live CD, that tab WAS 
checked.  I went back to my own installation, checked that tab, and now 
it works.
