Can you disable DHCP at the router, then configure the laptop
to use a static IP address?

I guessed you're connecting with ethernet, but if this is a
wireless connection, my answer could be more trouble than it's
worth.  Would it then want to use the same IP when connecting
to *all* wireless networks, or only this network?
