[Discuss] Version Control systems [WAS: Possible backup scenarios for a 500GB drive]

Daniel, Alan and whomever else wants to chime in,

What about other versioning control systems?  How does SVN compare?   
Specifically I am interested in hearing about SVN in contrast with  
git though I am happy to hear about other alternatives as well.

1) how easy is it to set up initially?
2)  learn how to use?
3)  personal experience and anecdotal information
