Indeed, that is disappointing.
My own experience with older hard drives is some of a given model are just
noisier than others so its possible you got a bad one in this respect. Also,
according to the review at http://techreport.com/articles.x/10063 which
measured the noise for a wide variety of drives, the 7200.10 was near the
best for idle, and near the worst when active, but the noise range for the
idle case, and the noise range for the active case were each quite small
between the various drives. Thus, I am not sure the human ear could even
notice the small decibel difference between the drives that were tested. So
all drives of a given class may essentially be the same in this regard, and
the observed variations between them are just the luck of the draw.
The Lan-Li case included in our hardware package has special noise-reducing
HD mounts. Hopefully that will help a lot.
