Not a Gmail user myself, or IMAP for that matter, but I wonder
what time of day this is happening?  After working nights for so
long, it's amazing how slow some network services can be during
peak hours.

Some?   Well, they're all a little less responsive, actually.
Hardly ever enough to be irritating, but I have noticed.
