I did have issues on Mandriva 2008 install with Nvidia drivers.  They
bricked the system as you described.  I had to either go to failsafe start,
ie single user, or make sure I Ctrl-Alt-F1 before the driver fully loads.
Then I used the Mandriva tools to load the proprietary drivers, reboot and
it was fine.
