Display managers will only try starting X so many times before giving
up. Last time I had issues I think it was three times.
As well I had some version of debian actually bring up their text
based X configuration dialog, so you could try reconfiguring X;
perhaps because you have a new video card.
However if there is an actual serious bug in the video driver which
corrupts the dislpay, there is nothing the kernel or anything else can
do about it.

Thats what runlevels and single user mode are for.
