I know the chipset, and Ubuntu is supposed to support it. It is 
correctly detected. It is Intel, and they have LINUX drivers on their 
website, but I think Kubuntu/Ubuntu already supports them.  I guess I 
will next try your suggestion to turn off all security and go from 
there.  I am a bit surprised that, unlike Windows, Ubuntu does not show 
all networks within range.  I did find sort of a tutorial on an IBM 
website, but it was pretty complicated, so haven't gotten around to 
trying it yet. I will check out your ideas first.
