 You didn't, the firmware already did it for you. Most people don't realize
that most routers are pretty much access points with one additional port marked
WAN, plus some software.

 Yes, the linksys acts as an access point (provides the wireless) and the dlink
comtinues to functions as your gateway router providing the DHCP services to the lan.
