I use VNC at work. I can work on the desktop of any machine on
the network from the comfort of my cubicle. I just open a VNC client
on my computer, set it to full-screen mode and away I go.
This of course requires setting up VNC services on each machine
you want to work with, but that's really no big deal. There
are client/server for linux, windows and mac.
So, when I switch desktops, I'm really switching to another machine
totally. I can even have **ALL** my client sessions open on all the
computers at the same time. If I put one client session on each
of my local desktops, I can toggle between machines by changing
desktops.
Also a nice feature of VNC is I can cut and paste between
client and remote. So I can pull values from, say Excel on
a windowsXP machine, into gnumeric or Openoffice on a
connected linux machine, or I can type up a wget
script in notepad and paste it into an editor on
a remote X desktop and execute on that machine.
Loads of number crunching and no slow-downs.
