Murray... you need to get Ubuntu/Kubuntu installed now! This entire thread is
crazy when you compare 'other' distros with those I just stated. Installing
software using either Synaptic or Adept is a dream... choose the package I wish
to install, request the install and then click apply. It's that simple. Firefox,
Java, Acroread, etc etc... all install perfectly and I am notified through the Update
Manager of any package upgrades 24/7. I used to use Mandriva, FC, RH and the like
for the longest time but once I switched to Ubuntu/Kubuntu I can't imagine ever
going back to a distro that didn't use apt-get :)
For the odd application that is not found in the repositories I've had great
success in finding a .deb package. There have only been a couple of programs
that have truly given me problems since I made the switch.
p.s. Other than the odd hickup, which are fixable, a complete distribution upgrade
is also fairly painless under Ubuntu/Kubuntu.
