What is the speed like. Are the SMB shares as fast to r/w
as a local drive? They're firewire and I only have 2.6 kernel.

I consistently have 900Gigs of data to move between systems. I'd
really rather not do it over ethernet speeds.
Tried it didn't like it.

Got gigabit eth cards for source and destination but
the source mobo doesn't like the ethernet card. That left
100BT max. (ie: days to move data)

I also wanted to write to the drives while moving data
which, I think, ruled out mounting the NTFS drives
under linux.

With the EXT2 mounted under WinXP the transfer was
nicely fast-ish. Maybe finished overnight.
