[Discuss] Torn between Debian stable and another

I can't say that I'm a voice of experience regarding Debian and
Ubuntu, but if I'm not mistaken, I think an advantage to the software
ecosystem that's grown up around Ubuntu is that you can mix and match.
I'm in the process of doing that right now: setting up Linux Mint
(another Ubuntu derivative) and adding the "mythbuntu-desktop"
mega-package because setting up MythTV on slackware was too
time-consuming and I ended up not liking KnoppMyth.
The applications you mention might be in the Ubuntu Studio distro, and
there's the Mythbuntu distro to make sure you start with a good (I'm
guessing) mythtv setup to which you can add the other stuff.
