Hi Gordon,
Since you had trouble with the Xubuntu partitioning, I guess I would give it a try with UBCD. Don't forget to make a LINUX swap partition as well as a regular LINUX partition if UBCD will do it OK. I don't really know Xubuntu, but most distributions allow you to use existing partitions if there are any suitable ones.
