Thanks to everyone for their help.  I was missing a tiny, crucial step 
with Kubuntu Live DVD (the icon which looks like a wall jack in the 
lower right hand corner) -- I don't know why I did not figure that out 
from one of the earliest suggestions.  Probably just old age!

Anyway, Wireless works perfectly now with Kubuntu, and I have also now 
gotten Kubuntu to work in Persistent Mode!!! I will put the details in 
another post.
