[Discuss] Printer issues

I am running Kubuntu on two different computers, using CUPS. I will call
them A and B. I have never had any difficulties until recently.
On A, I have an HP DeskJet 670C. Recently, it just quit working. In
LINUX, it is not even detected anymore. Under System Settings >
Printers, if I try to add a local printer, that choice is grayed out.
I loaded the old Windows 98 to see if it would work with that. I get an
error saying there is no communication with it. I have checked the
cables and everything and they all seem to be OK.
On B, I have an Okidata OL600e, which is my "work horse" for printing.
If I am printing from B, I seem to have to restart the print server very
frequently. To print from A, it seems I have to go through a lot of
contortions to get it to print. When I try to print something, it says
it is doing it. Before doing the print, it says the Okidata is ready and
accepting print jobs. However, nothing actually prints. When I look at
the settings, there are no jobs pending. Sometimes, after I reboot
both computers, things will work OK for a little while (usually less
than an hour).
Any suggestions as to why the DeskJet is no longer detected, or as to
why the Print Server has to be restarted almost every time I want to
print something?
Thanks for any help.
Murray
