[Discuss] FTP server guidance

Hi everyone,

This is my first question posed to the knowledgeable minds of victoria.

I am hosting a few websites and have decided that I would like to
allow my peeps to use some client to upload their site content
(currently i force them to ssh in which seems to cause grumbling
amongst the masses, damn dreamweaver/frontpage users).  It would be
preferable if they would ftp in with some username and password (I've
been told local authentication is bad) and be thrown directly into the
htdocs folder relevant to their website.

I've fooled around with various servers and have realized I am a
little lost. (proftpd, vsftpd specifically)

Any help or tutorial links (as I have been unable to find good ones)
would be welcome.
