I am taking the advice of many on the list to really try to get Kubuntu
going. I had problems with the bootloader on previous attempts, but
decided to try again with the new release.

Things seemed to have gone OK, except for the following

At first boot after installation, it set up a "temporary" account
"oem". I used addgroup and adduser to set up regular users on the
system. I then logged out and selected "Restart". The screen went
blank (well, really a kind of gray), and then just hung there. After a
long time, trying all kinds of things like <CTRL><ALT><DELETE> and
various Fn with <CTRL> and/or <ALT>, I finally pressed the reset button
on the computer. It rebooted (after doing all the usual disk checks
when LINUX doesn't shut down properly.

I logged in as one of the users I had set up. Then I tried a couple of
administrative tasks but got messages like "wrong password" or
"conversation with su failed". I had set up a "root" user. If I do "su"
with it's password I can do some stuff, but I probably didn't set it up
correctly.

I CAN do administrative tasks by "switching user" to oem. However, my
understanding from the messages I got during install was that
"temporary" user would be deleted on the reboot. Perhaps this didn't
happen because the "Restart" didn't work.

Anyone got any ideas on what I have done wrong.

From first glance, Kubuntu looks a lot better than Mandriva.

Murray
