To what media (disk, DVD, Tape ???).
Will there be an administrator configuring it to begin with or will the
user be doing the configuration as well.
Is this a special case backup or a regular backup? (i.e. will it be run
only after special events or nightly?)
What sort of retention period is expected? Forever or re-using media/disk?

If there is an administrator, it is a regular backup and the end user
can manage tape changes (or it is going to disk), then I would strongly
suggest Bacula. It is an enterprise class backup system that supports
Linux, Unix, Windows and, I believe, Mac. The initial configuration is
more than an end user could really manage but once it is set up, it
"just works". Email alerts, web interface, tape/disk/DVD support,
retention periods, etc.etc.etc.

I have been using it at a number of different locations for about 4
years now and had zero problems with it.
