What distro? I'm running FC6 on my laptop and have been using the
hibernate feature a lot without issue.
If you're running an RPM based distro I suggest checking out the
ATrpms repo at http://atrpms.net/ and looking for the suspend2
kernels. Otherwise, check out http://www.suspend2.net/ which is the
package used in the suspend2 kernels provided by ATrpms.
I like using suspend2 as it uses your existing swap partition to store
all it's data and if you dual boot you can still boot another OS while
leaving your Linux desktop suspended.
