Got it.  When I killed off one of a set of processes started by a 
timesheet application I was trying several weeks ago, it went to 
shutdown by itself (must've been queued).

That was a hard bugger to kill.  Some kind of watchdog process kept 
respawning processes I killed off until I hit the right one.

The product in question is Journyx, in case anyone cares.

Yes, the system came back up fine.

ObNostalgia: I remember when the system process list fit on a screen 
and I knew what they all were.  Ah well...
