[Discuss] The system that won't die

My Fedora Core 5 is in a state where it won't shutdown. Everything
else is apparently working fine, but the commands

	poweroff
	telinit 0
	shutdown -h now
	reboot
	kill -9 1

merely send out the initial "system going down..." message (where
they're supposed to) and then return without anything else happening.

My console keyboard had been in a weird state thanks to my KVM I think,
and while I since have accidentally fixed it with a control-alt-del, I
still want to know why the system won't shut down. The X server is not
running. The ps entry for init is:

root 1 0.0 0.1 1988 688 ? S 2006 0:09 init [3]
