I'd rather have the box next to me, and have a really snappy GUI and all
that (I know VNC is pretty close locally...).
Your comment about the monitor reminded me of a huge pet peeve, though:
Things that make noise that don't need to.
In this category live such nuisance items as:
-Televisions (do YOU like listening to a 15,360Hz WHINE all day?)
-Monitors (which cost a lot more than TVs, and don't really have an
excuse for buzzing or whining or whatever)
-My DSL modem. It's a D-Link DSL-300I (the good one that they won't
sell you in a cheapo kit, but that their techs carry around). It
hisses. And it's not even the damn DSL driver circuit, where noise
might be expected due to signal intensity, it's in the ETHERNET
TRANSCEIVER!!
Right now I'm running a pair of Opterons, with 6 hard drives (one 15,000
RPM + 5 7200 RPM) and about 10 fans in the box, and the hissing sound
from my DSL modem is actually just as annoying (although not as loud) as
the cumulative noise of everything in the PC. And I can hear the TV
downstairs (below the loft area my PC is in) over all of *my* noise up here.
