[Discuss] Display problem

In Mandriva 2006, I am having an X display problem.

I think the problem may have resulted from a power failure yesterday 
while I was installing updates from Mandriva.

When I boot the system, it does not start X Windows, but instead comes 
up in console mode.

Whether I login as a user or root, I get the same problem when I try to 
start X Windows:

If I try
"startx"
I get the following type of message:

"auth:  Creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.NNNNNN"

where NNNNN is a different number whenever I try it. 
this is followed by:
"Authentication failed  -- cannot start X server"
"Perhaps you do not have console ownership?xinit: Server error."

I have looked at the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and it seems to be OK.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how I can get X working again? How do I 
get "console ownership" if that is really the problem.
