Stick with the forums, and you'll be set. Ubuntu forums have a great 
deal of knowledge, and generally people there don't have the "Linux 
guru" arrogance you find almost everywhere else.

Gentoo has a great wiki http://gentoo-wiki.com/Main_Page and there are 
step by step instructions on howto tweak configs
